Insulation resistance measuring device

Insulation resistance measurement on insulation materials, electrical devices and operating equipment.

There are numerous cables and conductors in every electrical device; their safety is of special importance. Damage can cause serious injuries to people and other living beings. The insulation of the conductors is of particular importance. This is generally made up of an insulating layer and sheaths the conductive elements of a device. It is thus important to be able to guarantee intact insulation through measuring devices with modern test technology before products are put on the market.

This is possible with the aid of an insulation resistance measuring device. Insulation resistance measurement is carried out on devices of protection class I and II. The test is especially important for class II devices since these do not have a PE conductor for earthing in the event of damage. Touching a device with faulty insulation can have fatal consequences.

What is an insulation resistance measuring device?

With the aid of an insulation resistance measuring device it is possible to apply voltage to the device conductors. The higher the insulation resistance measured in ohms, the better the result. If the insulation resistance increases, this means no fault current is flowing and the insulation is intact.

An insulation resistance measuring device can be used to determine deviations from standard values. Such a deviation is a clear sign of damage to the insulation. Such a device must not get into the shops and must be repaired. The measuring device works with high voltage inputs to be able to determine the insulation resistance. Such devices work exclusively with direct current.

Insulation resistance should always be measured using appropriate measuring devices before electrical devices are delivered. There is a legal obligation to test new devices, with requirements specified in DIN/EN standards. Beyond this, measurement of the insulation resistance is important following any modification or return to service of a device (VDE701/702).

The insulation can also become damaged during repairs. Equally, a repeat test should be performed on used devices for reasons of safety.

The use of an insulation measuring device

With the aid of an insulation resistance measuring device it is possible to measure the extent to which the insulation of an electrical test specimen is working. The test is always carried out with DC voltage.

In most cases a DC voltage of 500V DC is used.

The insulation resistance is determined. The insulation resistance should not fall below a minimum value. The higher the insulation resistance, the higher the quality of the insulation and the test result is good.

Depending on the standard used, the necessary test voltage and the required limit value of the insulation resistance can be set.

These are the ELABO devices

ELABO offers various devices in the field of insulation resistance measurement. These are available combined with a housing for mobile use or as a slide-in unit for a test equipment cabinet The model 90-2E tests with a voltage of 500V DC and adjustable limit values for insulation resistance. The model 90-4K on the other hand makes adjustable test voltage between 500 - 1000 volts direct current possible. Here is an overview list of the respective values for the two devices.
