PE conductor resistance measuring device

Guaranteed. Safe.

Many electrical devices can be found in households in particular. If their cables or conductors are damaged, this could have fatal consequences for the user in the worst case. To prevent this, protection class I devices have a protective earth (PE) conductor for electrical safety. All the conductive elements within the device must be connected to the PE conductor. This also includes the housing.

The task of the PE conductor is to earth the parts that can be touched in the event of an insulation fault. In the event of a fault, the short-circuit current would flow through the user's body to earth, which can lead to serious injuries or even death. The PE conductor connection dissipates the fault current to earth and thus protects the user.

Before a device is delivered, the PE conductor resistance must be checked. Devices with a PE conductor belong to protection class I. ELABO is specialised in the development of high-quality measuring devices for PE conductors.

Purpose of measuring PE conductor resistance

PrüfungOne of the most important tests on devices with protection class I is the test of effectiveness of the PE conductor connection, since this offers maximum operator safety for the operating company. If the PE conductor connection is damaged, the housing of the electrical equipment may be live in the event of a fault without an upstream safety device responding.

During the test of PE conductor resistance, it is particularly important that the PE conductor is continuously intact at all the conductive elements. An interruption in the PE conductor can be determined with the aid of the measurement.

Furthermore, the measuring device shows whether the measurable resistance value is below the mandatory standard for the product. With this value, it is safe to touch the device in the event of a fault. Measurement of the PE conductor resistance is carried out before a device is sold or after any changes have been made to it. This includes repairs or upgrades. Every change can cause damage to the PE conductor. In addition, the PE conductor of older devices can be damaged by heavy soiling or corrosion.

A PE conductor test is always carried out visually and electrically. Some damage can be seen directly in the PE conductor. Proper laying can also be established visually without further testing. Electrical testing reveals what the eye cannot see. A device can only be considered safe it the standard values are kept.

ELABO offers different devices for testing PE conductor resistance. The main differences between them are their different measuring ranges. The following gradings are available for the different categories:

  • Test voltage: 6 VAC / 10 VAC / 12 VAC
  • Measuring range: 200 / 300 / 350 Ohm
  • Test current: 25 A / 10 bis 25 A

Depending on the standard requirements of the devices to be tested, various measuring devices are offered. ELABO offers all measuring devices for PE conductor resistance in combination as a complete variant with a housing for mobile use or as a slide-in variant for a test equipment cabinet. This allows the testing station to be set up or expanded as required.
