High-voltage devices

Exact & reliable!

Safety should always be the top priority during all electrical work. A high-voltage tester can be used to check the dielectric strength of electrical installations. But how does the device work and what has to be heeded during its use?

We at ELABO have put the most important information together for you.

What are high-voltage testers and what are they used for?

High-voltage testers have different ports that can be used for testing electrical connections. Digital displays and controllers permit an exact overview of the respective electrical parameters, whereby high-voltage testers are made specifically for voltages above 1 kV.

Testers can determine whether the voltage is measurable at all and at the same time determine the intensity of the electrical high voltage. The testers are lance-shaped and equipped with an integrated test circuit.

Testers are used in the following areas - outdoor substations and transformer substations.

Why a separate tester is required for high voltages?

The suitable electrical test voltage for high voltage is between 1 kV and 765 kV. The respective values are specified in the IEC standards. There are separate low-voltage testers available for testing lower voltages. You don't only need a separate tester for practical reasons, but also on the basis of the safety requirements regulated by law in accordance with EN 61243-3. Depending on the measuring category, there are different regulations for the testers.

One thing that is very important is that potentially dangerous voltages can be detected during the test. Incorrect use must also be able to be reliably excluded – the quality of device manufacture and servicing are top of the list accordingly. It must be guaranteed, for example, that no current flows through the body or flashovers occur during correct use.

How the high-voltage tester works!

High-voltage testers have a longer shape than low-voltage testers, but are also guided by hand to the high-voltage conductor. The test circuit is also located in the lance. Through this, the signals are converted into a digital display.

  • Direct current voltage (DC)
  • Insulation resistance measurement

Every operator must be trained in use of the device. A device-specific operating manual must be heeded when recording electrical test voltage. Since 2011, all devices must comply with at least measuring category CAT 2.

two-handed operating system creates additional safety. There are further safety requirements for test voltage in rooms with temperatures, humidity levels or voltages deviating from the standard.
